#1 - WORX WG163 GT 3.0 - Our Choice

The WORX WG163.9 is the best cordless weed eater we have seen. Unless you are a commercial gardener, we believe this is the best cordless weed eater for most people.

Specifications

  • Voltage 20V
  • No Load Speed 7600/min
  • Cutting Diameter 12 inch

Worx is a reliable name when it comes to making some of the best gardening tools for the modern gardener. For those of you who know about the manufacturer and you have been into gardening for a while, you probably know it because of the WG175 model cordless trimmer. The Worx WG163 GT 3.0 GT is a newer version of the WG175. It is smaller, lighter and offers a whole different set of advantages over its predecessor.

The Worx WG163 is our leading choice for the best trimmers and weed eaters in 2019 due to several reasons. You can expect all the classic advantages that find in cordless weed eaters in the Worx WG163. You get complete freedom of movement with this weed eater. It also does not create a lot of noise and you do not need to be bothered about a cord and switching outlets and the harmful gas emissions that you get with gas-powered trimmers.

The Worx WG163 offers one very distinct advantage over its predecessor and other models: it has an excellent run time. Powered by two batteries, each battery gives you a run time of 20 minutes. That is more than enough to maintain a regular suburban lawn.

The Worx 163 offers substantial options when it comes to adjustments to meet your garden maintenance needs and there is more. If you need to, you can convert this into an edger without the use of any tools in order to be able to fine tune the edges of your lawn and make them sharper.

The Worx WG163 features a very useful telescopic shaft that comes in handy for a wide variety of gardening applications. You can set the length according to the height that you are most comfortable with. This makes it easier to reach all the places you need to without having to bend your back or knees. Home gardeners know how much of an issue being in uncomfortable positions while gardening can be. It takes a toll on your back and leaves it aching. The Worx WG163 removes a big issue that you face with typical weed eaters and that is one of the biggest reasons why it is our favorite among the best cordless weed eaters you can get in 2019. On top of all that, it is also a pretty affordable model.

Minor Issues

As with all cordless yard tools, there are a couple of disadvantages to be aware of:

Bear in mind that this is still a cordless weed eater and that means it is not the most powerful unit if you compare it to gas-powered weed eaters. The manufacturer markets that you can leave one battery on charge while you use the weed eater with the other.

The thing is, its batteries last long, but they also take a very long time to recharge when they are completely depleted. It’ll take you three hours to charge a fully depleted battery. If you have a regular-sized garden, this would not be much of an issue. If you have a large property and you need to maintain the lawn, this might not be the best choice for you unless you get spare batteries.

Warranty

Worx offers a decent warranty on the WG163 and its batteries. You can claim the warranty for 3 years if the unit or its batteries start becoming problematic. The charger for the batteries is covered with a 1-year warranty.

The video below shows some of the features of the WORX WG163.9:

WE LIKE:

  • Long battery time
  • Completely cordless
  • No noise

WE DON'T LIKE:

  • Battery takes too long to charge
  • Not very powerful
  • Not suitable for very large properties

#2 - Black and Decker LSTE523

A more compact cordless model

BLACK+DECKER LSTE523 Li-On String Trimmer

Specifications

  • Cutting Swath 12 inch
  • Feed System - EasyFeed
  • Line Diameter 0.065 inch
  • Replacement Accessories     AF-100
  • Rpm   5,500 - 7,200
  • Voltage  20 V
  • Weight 6.3 lbs.

Another one of the best in the market, the LSTE253 is a string trimmer made by one of the biggest power tool brands. Black and Decker is not just a manufacturer when it comes to woodworking tools (they are very well-known for those), they also have highly capable gardening tools like weed eaters.

The Black and Decker LSTE253 is a 20V lithium ion battery-powered unit. This means you can use the battery and charger of any other Black and Decker 20V MAX tools that you already own. The weed eater features the Power Drive Transmission. This gives you a lot more cutting power at the string and you can choose between two different speeds.

Choosing the lower speed is ideal for regular maintenance and trimming needs. It also helps the battery run for a lot longer than it would at a faster speed. Converting this Black and Decker model from a weed eater to lawn edger takes a matter of seconds. All you need to do is push the collar down, turn the cutting end and then pull the collar back up. With no tools and in no time at all, you get a whole different tool capable of handling other gardening tasks.

The string feeder on this is quite simple and that allows you to advance your line by just pressing a button without the need of any bumping. The 30-minute battery time on power saving mode allows you to take care of the maintenance of a regular-sized lawn in one charge.

Minor Issues

The Black and Decker LSTE253 is one of our favorites in the list, but it does come with its limitations. It can operate very well on regular mode, but does not last very long on a single charge. The power saving mode gives you more run time, but that does not mean you get to enjoy the same performance from this unit. The fact that it is compatible with Black and Decker’s 20V MAX tools when it comes to batteries and charger is pretty convenient because you can use the batteries of other devices, but it is problematic when you don’t have those extra batteries.

Warranty

The Black and Decker LSTE253 comes with a 2 year limited warranty against any of the faults in workmanship or the any defects in the material of the weed eater. The company will easily replace or repair anything that might be wrong with the device provided that it is not a result of abuse.

WE LIKE:

  • Long battery life on power saving mode
  • No emissions
  • Not noisy

WE DON'T LIKE:

  • Not very powerful on power saving mode
  • Battery drains fast on regular mode
  • String auto feeder lever is made of plastic

#3 - Makita XRU09PT

A weed eater on a more higher end; our premium choice

Specifications

  • Cutting Capacity (diameter): 13-3/4"
  • No Load Speed (2 spd): 5,000/6,500 RPM
  • Battery: 2X 18V LXT® Lithium-Ion
  • Overall Length: 69"
  • Net Weight (with battery): 9.9 lbs.

Makita XRU09PT 18V X2 (36V) LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless String Trimmer Kit (5.0Ah)

When it comes to cordless weed eaters, the Makita XRU09PT is the closest you can come to a commercial grade weed eater. The unit is well built, it has just the right amount of functions as a weed eater to limit any kind of problems you typically get with weed eaters and it is a useful power tool.

There is a two battery system that allows you to work with one battery while the other charges. The battery also charges pretty fast. The bump head works well and the line that comes along with it can cater to homeowners’ needs for garden maintenance. A lot of people do not like the bump head on the Makita model and there are jamming issues with the trimmer in tougher applications.

The price is a little bit on the higher end of the spectrum and a lot of homeowners might not feel inclined to overspend on a weed eater.

WE LIKE:

  • Powerful trimmer
  • No has emissions to worry about
  • Has a great torque

WE DON'T LIKE:

  • Jamming issues
  • Bump head can get annoying
  • Stringing it is difficult

#4 - Greenworks 12-Inch 24V Cordless String Trimmer/Edger

Compact and powerful

Greenworks 12-Inch 24V Cordless String Trimmer/Edger, 2.0 AH Battery Included 21342

Specifications

  • Battery Amp Hours: 2.0 Ah
  • Cutting Width: 12 in.
  • Drive Shaft Style: Straight
  • Drive Shaft Type: Telescoping
  • Handle Type: Wrap-Around
  • Line Diameter: 0.065 in.
  • Voltage: 24V

Greenworks made this 24V cordless weed eater as a smaller version of the 40V units that they are well-known for. This is on the list of the best weed eaters in 2019 because of the fact that it is a good weed eater that features a strong brush-less motor. It is a lot like the 40V model, but it is more suitable for people who do not require a lot of power from their weed eaters.

The brushless motor delivers more power with greater efficiency. If you use the normal cutting mode, a single charge on this unit can last you for 50 to 60 minutes and that is more than enough time for regular-sized yards. You do not even need to bother with an extra battery.

There are not a lot of cordless weed eater models out there that can match the Greenworks 21342 cordless string trimmer. The best thing about it is the fact that the battery delivers a consistent amount of power to the cutting head instead of fading out as the battery depletes its power.

WE LIKE:

  • Fast battery charging time
  • Long lasting battery on single charge
  • Delivers consistent power on its run time

WE DON'T LIKE:

  • Good value for money but expensive
  • Instructions on manual are hard to understand
  • Less powerful than its predecessor

What Makes a Good Cordless Weed Eater?

Our buying guide will make sure you're informed before you decide which model is best for you.

Now that you know about the best weed eaters your money can buy, let’s take a look at some of the things which can help you narrow down your choices even more to pick out the model perfect for your needs.

Type of Shaft

There are two types of shafts, which you can get with cordless weed eaters: curved and straight. The curved shafts provide more convenience in terms of getting a flat angle of cutting without having to adjust your body to make the angle. Flat shafts usually come with telescopic capabilities, which allow you to adjust the length of the shaft to something that’s more comfortable according to your height.

Cordless Trimmer Line

No matter which model you get, there will come a time that you will have to replace the trimmer string on the cordless weed eater you are using. You need to get a trimmer that has an easily available replacement string and you can easily replace the existing one when it wears out too much.

Two in One Capability

Some weed eaters offer the capability of converting into a lawn edger as well. This allows you to be able to reach the areas where your lawn mower cannot reach and you cannot get the right angle with a standalone weed eater. Try to go with a model that offers you this convenience.

Safety

A few pointers to help you stay safe when using your trimmer

Safety is always going to be an important part of the decision making process, especially when you are getting a power tool with a very fast rotating cutting head. Make sure you go for a model that offers an ample amount of protection for the user and use the weed eater only how it is intended in order to keep yourself and those around you safe.

Be very careful about using this tool if you have pets or small children living with you. Remove any and all small debris in the garden before you get to work so that there is no chance of any debris flying at super fast speeds outwards or towards yourself.

Most importantly, make sure you wear proper safety gear while you use this power tool.

Maintenance / Cleaning

Tips to make your hedge trimmer last as long as possible

Just like any other mechanical device, even the best weed eaters have their maintenance needs. Read all the instructions and recommendations by the manufacturer on how to take care of the weed eater you purchase so that you can use it for a very long time to come.

Recalls

Occasionally faults are discovered after a product has gone on sale, usually requiring the product to be recalled by the manufacturer.

There were no recalls listed for any of the hedge trimmers mentioned here at the time of writing (August 2019). However, it's always a good idea to check the latest information at the Consumer Product Safety Commission website before buying any large, expensive or potentially dangerous product.
